An Iranian lawmaker says non-binding resolutions adopted by the UN will not help improve the situation of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, urging the UN to take practical measures.


Mehrdad Baouj-Lahouti on Friday dismissed non-binding resolutions as ineffective in resolving the problems of Rohingyas, saying that the UN must deal with human rights violations across the globe without double-standard behaviors.

PHUKET: A total of 127 Rohingya have been arrested in southern Thailand and trucked back to the Thailand-Burma border.

Those held were in five minivans in a convoy bound for the Malaysian border crossing at Padang Besar in Songkhla province.

Maung Daw, Arakan- Since 5AM this morning, the village of Khadir Bil (Nyaung Chaung), Maung Daw has been under the besiege and blockage of a joint department of Police, Hluntin (Security Forces), NaSaKa (Border Security Froces) and Military. The joint department is carrying out mass arbitrary arrests of innocent Rohingyas in the village.

“At 5AM, a joint department of Police, Hluntin (Security Forces), NaSaKa (Border Security Froces) and Military besieged the village Khadir Bil (Nyaung Chaung).They have put blockades around the village since then so that no Rohingya from the village can escape. Now the joint department is raiding every house in the village and arbitrarily arresting innocent Rohingyas. Besides, they have been harassing Rohingya women in the village. Meanwhile, some innocent Rohingyas are being released after extorting money.

BROUK Welcomes UNGA Resolution on Burma

On 24 December 2012 the United Nations General Assembly expressed serious concern over violence between Rohingya Muslims and Buddhists in Burma (Myanmar) and called upon the Government to address reports of human rights abuses by the authorities.

The 193-nation General Assembly approved by consensus a non-binding resolution, which Burma said last month contained a “litany of sweeping allegations, accuracies of which have yet to be verified.”

UN Humanitarian Chief Says Rohingya Plight ‘Dire’

The United Nations humanitarian chief described the plight of Burma's Rohingya Muslims as “dire,” as she toured crowded refugee camps filled with those who have fled deadly communal violence.

Humanitarian chief Valerie Amos says she witnessed thousands of people in “overcrowded, substandard shelter with poor sanitation” during her tour on Thursday of several camps in western Rakhine state.

Expert warns of Rohingya genocide

“Warning signs” are in place for a genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, an Al Jazeera investigation has been told by a leading expert in the field.

According to Professor William Schabas, until recently President of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, the findings of an Al Jazeera documentary reveal that “we’re moving into a zone where the word can be used”.

In June, Myanmar state media reported 78 deaths during sectarian violence between Buddhist Rakhine and Muslim Rohingya communities. The Al Jazeera team discovered that official statements provided only a small part of what took place.
